To all Guard and Reserve service members and their families

Authority: DoD Directive 1250.1, National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve and DoD Instruction 1205.22, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

Purpose: To allow members of the Reserve Components to nominate Civilian Employer for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.

Routine Use(s): Disclosure of records are generally permitted under 5 U.S.C. 552a(b) of the Privacy Act of 1974, as amended. Applicable Blanket Routine Use(s) are: Law Enforcement Routine Use, Congressional Inquiries, Disclosure to the Department of Justice for Litigation Routine Use, Disclosure of Information to the National Archives and Records Administration Routine Use, and Data Breach Remediation Purposes Routine Use. The DoD Blanket Routine Uses set forth at the beginning of the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) compilation of systems of records notices may apply to this system. 1. The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest Department of Defense award given to a Civilian Employer for exceptional support of Service member Guard and Reserve Service.

2. Nominations are accepted from Service members. Service members may authorize a family member to submit on their behalf.

3. If you have never nominated your employer for the Patriot Award, recommend doing so at www.esgr.mil select “Nominate Your Employer.”

EXAMPLE: My employer is always engaged with its Guard and Reserve employees and always inquiring about Reserve duties and drills. The recognition is considerable in normal conversation and also in publications on the company website, advertising materials, and in events it sponsors.

EXAMPLE: My supervisor has asked me for referrals for members of my unit who are seeking employment and they regularly attend military job fairs. When I was hired, my interview was conducted while I was deployed by using video conference.
